Struggling With Sleep Apnea? Follow These Tips

Sleep apnea is a common, too frequently undiagnosed health problem that presents a myriad number of problems. The key to living a healthy life in spite of being diagnosed with sleep apnea is learning everything you can about the best treatment options. Continue reading this article to discover several sleep apnea health care tips.

Did you know that sleep apnea is more than just snoring? Your breathing may actually stop, or it may become very shallow, and this could happen upwards of a hundred times or more each night. If you feel you may be suffering from this affliction, you should see a doctor and be properly diagnosed and discuss a treatment that works best for you.

Stop smoking. Smoking cigarettes is bad for you for many different reasons. Smoking can also cause sleep apnea. It isn’t just bad for your lungs; it can also cause your upper airway to swell. This can make it difficult for you to get the breath that you need at night.

Sleep Apnea also affects children. IF you have a child with sleep apnea you can tell through poor grades, irritability, or hostility. The symptoms can be confused with those of ADHD, so it is important to speak with your doctor to see if sleep apnea is a possibility.

Keep your bedroom in prime shape for sleeping. Insomnia and sleep apnea are often connected. This makes keeping an environment in which you sleep at the right temperature, lightness level and sound level important for helping you get a good night of rest. The right environment also means leaving your stresses outside the bedroom to ensure you are relaxed enough to fall asleep.

Try to avoid sleeping at high altitudes. High altitudes can worsen sleep apnea. The air in high altitudes is much thinner and, consequently, more difficult to breathe. Sleep apnea is already causing your body to take in less oxygen at night. A high altitude environment can only exacerbate your condition.

Take your CPAP anywhere you go, even if you make a trip to the hospital. If your stay is planned or an emergency, you will need your CPAP device either way. The machine is pre-set to your specifications and you have the benefit of wearing the mask you are already familiar with. Having your own familiar equipment eases the strangeness of being in the hospital, and helps you sleep more restfully.

Think about using nasal spray if your nasal passages are stopped up. It may offer a couple nights of relief. If you use nasal spray alot you may damage it. Always speak with your pharmacist to make sure you choose the product that is right for you.

If you have difficulties sleeping because of your sleep apnea, you should avoid driving or operating dangerous machines. If you do not get a good night of sleep, take public transportation instead of driving to prevent accidents and do not take a job in a factory or on a construction site.

Try to slim down. Sleep apnea is exacerbated and sometimes even caused by obesity. Try losing enough weight to shift your BMI from obese to just overweight or even healthy. People who have lost weight have improved their sleep apnea symptoms, and some have even cured their sleep apnea completely.

In order to live a healthy life after being diagnosed with sleep apnea, it is important to educate yourself on the disease and study all of the latest, most effective treatment options. Sleep apnea is not a death sentence. By taking advantage of the tips and advice offered in this article you can dramatically improve your health.
