Tips For Sleep Apnea Sufferers And Those Who Love Them

Sleep apnea is a very serious condition and is much more than just snoring. Your breathing actually stops or is very shallow. Read on to see if you exhibit the signs of this serious affliction and learn what you can do to help you get a healthier night of sleep.

Consider doing a few very specific exercises before going to bed each night, to alleviate some of your sleep apnea symptoms. Exercising throat and tongue muscles has been proven in scientific studies to reduce snoring, improve breathing and lessen the more profound effects of sleep apnea when done according to doctor’s orders.

Start playing a wind instrument to alleviate your sleep apnea symptoms. In Germany, research has been done that suggests playing the didgeridoo will train the muscles of the upper airway. It helps to strengthen the muscles in the throat, which collapse during sleep apnea episodes. Because of this, regular playing of this instrument can aid sleep by reducing the various symptoms that sleep apnea produces.

If you decide to try a CPAP machine, do not give up until at least a few weeks. A lot of sleep apnea patients give up before they really get a chance to get used to their machine. Wait until you are comfortable with sleeping while wearing a mask and you should really notice a difference.

Eating healthily can help you shed weight and relieve sleep apnea. A lot of people are surprised to learn how their poor diet could be causing sleep apnea. It has been shown in studies that those who eat unhealthier foods face more severe sleep apnea than their overweight, yet healthy-eating, counterparts.

Do not take sleeping pills if you suffer from sleep apnea. These pills are not recommended if you suffer from this condition because they relax the muscles of your throat. Skipping them can actually help you get a better night of sleep because your apnea symptoms are not aggravated.

Get a mouth guard made especially for sleep. If you have a recessed chin, overbite or a small jaw, they way your jaw sits while you sleep may be causing the breathing problems while you sleep by narrowing your airways. A mouth guard can correct this and help you sleep better.

If you suspect that you have a sleeping disorder, but are unsure, enter a sleep study. They may be able to diagnose your disorder as sleep apnea and make suggestions regarding treatment. Treatments include mouth guards, CPAP, diet changes, and modifications of sleeping habits. You won’t know your options until you speak with someone about it.

To decrease your risk of sleep apnea symptoms, lose some weight. A number of patients have found that shedding excess pounds is enough to resolve sleep apnea all by itself. Even a few pounds can help your sleep apnea symptoms.

Drink one cup of caffeinated coffee a few hours before you go to sleep. It may seem silly to drink a caffeine drink at night, but this can actually help keep your throat open while you sleep. You may have to play around with what time you drink the coffee to avoid restlessness.

Do not take pain medications such as morphine. This medication can lower your oxygen level and make your symptoms even worst. If you take a high dose of morphine, your life could be in danger. If you go to the hospital and are given a pain medication, let the doctors know you have sleep apnea.

As you have learned from the above article, sleep apnea is serious and needs to be treated. You have been given tips on what to look for and ideas what can help, but always check with a doctor first and foremost. You don’t want to try to treat this on your own. Soon, you will be sleeping more restfully.
